The National Science Council reaffirmed its multipronged strategy aimed at boosting Taiwan’s network communications industry during a review meeting Dec. 26 in Taipei.
NSC Deputy Minister Chen Cheng-hong said the council would achieve leading market share for 10 items of network communication equipment, and surpass NT$1.5 trillion (US$494.9 billion) in 2013 production for communications equipment and components.
Chen said revisions to the Networked Communications Program are under consideration, adding that the NSC will participate in various international communications standards.
The strategy will also focus on developing key technology such as communications software and platforms, embedded software, applications and services, as well as policy and regulatory environment studies.
In related news, the NSC assessed the latest series of academic achievements under its National Research Program for Genomic Medicine.
According to the NSC, a total of 1,174 articles have been cited in international journals and publications; 2,130 master’s and doctoral students fostered; and 1,244 academic activities held.
In the area of technology, 96 patents were obtained; 68 cases of technology transfer in excess of NT$36 million completed; and over NT$550 million in service fees generated by core facilities for domestic researchers.
As for the economic effects of the program, 76 cases of cooperation among industry, academia and government have resulted in output of more than NT$14 million. There are also 16 cases of manufacturers making investments totaling over NT$53 million, as well as roughly NT$104 million in private investment. (SB-HZW)
